Method · How work stays on its aim

ALIGN.

Align, Meet, Coach, Lead, Reflect. Five stages that keep work on its aim, first written for the managers of a retail network and now the five stages of a Paddock20 engagement.

The five stages

One loop, run again and again.

  1. 01

    Align

Agree on the aim. Name the problem, not the symptom, and make sure the person who owns the outcome and the person doing the work mean the same thing.

  2. 02

    Meet

Turn the aim into a plan: what gets done, in what order, by whom and with what tools.

  3. 03

    Coach

Keep the work on its aim while it moves. Drift is named and corrected at the weekly, not after weeks of it.

  4. 04

    Lead

Get through the hard part: the blocker, the deadline, the piece that will not behave.

  5. 05

    Reflect

Look at what it did once it is running, and write down what was learned so it never depends on one person.

Where it runs

Three places.

As a manager’s cadence

Five phases a manager runs with every report. Written for a retail network and used by its managers from 2002 to 2019.

As an engagement

On Paddock20 the same five words are the stages a project moves through, from the first brief to the review after launch.

As a free score

The Align Diagnostic: 12 questions, four pillars and a score from 0 to 100. It takes about 90 seconds and needs no account.

What the field calls it

The same thing, by other names.

  • Structured coaching framework
  • Coaching cadence
  • Five-phase manager model
  • Leadership operating system
  • Leadership development curriculum
Common questions

In short.

What is ALIGN?+

A five-stage framework for keeping work on its aim: Align, Meet, Coach, Lead, Reflect. It began as the cadence a manager runs with every report and is now also the five stages a Paddock20 engagement moves through.

Where did it come from?+

It was written for the managers of an AT&T authorized retailer’s network and used across that network from 2002 to 2019.

What is the Align Diagnostic?+

A free tool on Paddock20 with 12 questions across four pillars, Toe, Camber, Caster and Thrust. It returns a score from 0 to 100 in one of six bands, and names the weakest pillar as the first thing to fix.
